Genome editing-based approaches for imaging protein localization and dynamics in the mammalian brain

•New methods for in vivo protein labeling have been developed using CRISPR-Cas9.•Endogenous proteins are mapped in the brain with high resolution and contrast.•Various proteins are rapidly mapped in any cell types and regions in the brain.•The methods can be used at any age from embryonic, neonatal to adult brains.
