A narrative synthesis of possible causes and risk factors of hoarding behaviours

•Traumatic events were found to be positively correlated with hoarding behaviours.•Emotional factors, especially anxiety sensitivity, were found to be consistently linked with hoarding severity.•For neural correlates, the evidence remains inconclusive regarding the specific regions in the brain that are implicated in hoarding behaviour.•Evidence for the genetic basis of hoarding is varied.
