•Fatigue behavior of SMC composites under different stress ratios has been tested.•Correlation between fiber orientation and fatigue behavior is observed.•Fatigue failure mechanisms are analyzed through microstructure characterization.•Constant fatigue life diagram of SMC is established with fiber orientation tensor.
