•Nocturnal laying hen behavior was affected by northern fowl mites.•Behaviors became more fragmented, being performed at higher frequencies.•Resting quantity & quality were reduced because hens woke up often and rested less.•This behavioral change was interpreted as restlessness due to irritation.
