•Server layout optimization using MOGA is a promising way to improve data centre cooling.•Flow rate and DIMM spacing are more dominant design parameters than the DIMM angles.•After optimization, the reduction in entropy generation rate can reach up to 15%.•After optimization, the outlet air temperature uniformity can improve by up to 42%.
