•η′ ↔ ηc ↔ η phase transformation occurred in the Cu6Sn5 core layers.•Formation of the metastable phase in Cu6Sn5 was structure and stress dependent.•Risk of retarded Cu6Sn5 phase transformation was reduced by isothermal treatment.
