Optimization of a portable hollow-fiber-based device for extracting radiokrypton dissolved in deep groundwater and selection of 222Rn as an indicator of Kr extraction efficiency

•Portable devices for extracting radio Kr from deep groundwater were optimized.•Contamination by 81Kr from modern air was negligible for groundwater dating up to 1 Ma old.•222Rn extraction efficiency was a suitable indicator of Kr extraction efficiency.
