Association between sedative-hypnotic medication use and incidence of cancer in Korean Nation Health Insurance Service data

•Risk for overall cancer incidence increased in female hypnotic users.•Prostate and lung cancer risk increased significantly in male hypnotic users.•Thyroid, breast, ovarian, and lung cancer risk increased in female hypnotic users.•Participants exposed to GABAA hypnotics showed a larger increase in risk.
