•The Intelligent Self-Designing (ISD) Strategy provided maximum control performance.•The dynamic allocation improved performance, shifting the Pareto-frontier forward.•The modified HEKC-II, operationalised for high variabilities, had better results than HKC.•Performance can still be increased with multi-triggers at multi-levels of FG buffer or WIP.•The Base-Stock parameter can be combined with the demand communication parameter (DE).
