Characteristics of Office-Based Providers Associated with Secure Electronic Messaging Use: Achieving Meaningful Use

•Eighty-nine percent of patients whose usual source of care had electronic health records were able to exchange secure messages with their provider.•Patients whose usual source of care practices reported being certified as a patient-centered medical home were 79 percent more likely to have been able to exchange secure messages.•Ninety-six percent of patients of academic medical centers were able to exchange secure messages with their provider.•Patients who reported being diagnosed with diabetes were 39 percent more likely to have seen a usual source of care provider that used secure messaging.
