•Highly aligned polycaprolactone/gelatin nanofibers were fabricated and crosslinking using EDC/NHS.•Cell proliferation rate was optimal in the PCL/GE (9:1) group, but tenogenic differentiation rate was best for the PCL/GE (7:3) group.•The PCL/GE (7:3) group enhanced the tendon-specific regenerative capacity in the rat model.
