High temperature volatile yield and nitrogen partitioning during pyrolysis of coal and biomass fuels

•Chars were obtained from fast pyrolysis to 1600 °C in a high temperature wire mesh reactor.•Volatile yield for different coal and biomass fuels was calculated.•Nitrogen partitioning for different coal and biomass fuels was obtained.
