Development of a genetic tool for determining breed purity of cattle

•Only a small set of SNPs, when accurately chosen, was needed to differentiate among the Dutch local cattle breeds.•The reference population of purebred animals showed genetic clusters that corresponded to their breed designations and its usefulness for assignment of future unknowns.•A genetic test was developed to unequivocally determine the breed origin of animals without pedigree data.
