•The grassland AGB decreased from the southeast to the northwest on the Tibetan Plateau, with an average value of 77.21 gm−2.•The inter-annual variation of AGB was significantly and positively correlated with temperature.•Precipitation had a greater impact on the AGB spatial distribution than temperature.•The Random Forest is an effective method in the AGB estimation on the Tibetan Plateau.
