摘要

•The average grain size of Mg-4Al-5RE (wt%) is dramatically decreased through the addition of 0.66 wt% Gd.•The acicular Al11RE3 phase of Mg-4Al-5RE (wt%) is modified to rod-like shape through the addition of 0.66 wt% Gd.•The modified microstructures are attributed to the formation of Al2(Gd, RE).•The modified alloy exhibits dramatically enhanced strength and ductility.
