•Seed germination in Dongdao-4 rice is less inhibited by saline-alkaline stress than Jigeng-88 rice.•Dongdao-4 seeds contain higher endogenous concentrations of gibberellins (GA1 and GA4) than Jigeng-88 seeds when challenged by saline-alkaline stress.•Dongdao-4 seeds exhibit a higher activity of α-amylase than in Jigeng-88 seeds under saline-alkaline stress.
