Reduced-impact logging for climate change mitigation (RIL-C) can halve selective logging emissions from tropical forests

•Selective logging emits 6% of tropical greenhouse gases annually.•Improved practices can reduce emissions by 44% while maintaining timber production.•Needed are improved wood utilization, narrower roads, and smaller skidders.•We propose a pantropical target carbon impact factor as a performance benchmark.
