The planning of selective collection in a real-life vehicle routing problem: A case in Rio de Janeiro

•The paper aims to evaluate the selective collection in commercial establishments.•The software ORTEC Routing and Dispatch is used to optimize the real-life operation.•Reduction of 27.72% in the total cost per client with the planning regions.•Reduction of 45.40% in the total cost per client with the whole collection region.•The proposal is beneficial for private companies and for the public point of view.
