摘要

•STAT3β reveals a unique transcriptional role by forming heterodimer with STAT3α or ternary complex with other co-activators.•STAT3β exerts a “spongy cushion” effect through cushioning the transient and intense transcriptional role of STAT3α.•STAT3β plays a suppressive role in cancer through regulating inflammatory factors, tumor microenvironment and immune cells.•STAT3β can reduce resistance to chemotherapy, induce apoptosis and be an independent prognostic factor.
