•Occurrence data for the first French total diet study for infants and toddlers.•15 trace elements analysed in 291 representative food samples.•Processed foods indicated higher levels of trace elements in infant foods category.•High levels of Al, Cd, Co, Cr and Ni have been found in chocolate-based foods.
