•High efficiency high Ga content CuIn0.5Ga0.5Se solar cells is achieved.•Optimum thickness of the wide-gap CIGS absorber is 1.6 µm.•The crystallinity of the wide-bandgap CIGS absorber is enhanced by reducing its thickness.•The carrier collection length of CIGS solar cells is improved by reducing its thickness.
