Optical and spectral properties of Ho:Yb:YVO4 crystal irradiated by 6.0-MeV C ions

We report the Ho:Yb:YVO4 planar waveguide fabricated by 6.0-MeV C ions irradiation with fluences of 1.5 × 1014 cm−2 at room temperature. In this work, the prism-coupling measurement and reflectivity calculation method (RCM) were performed to study the guiding mode properties when the transverse electric (TE) modes were excited. The results indicate that the excited modes can be well confined by the 6.0-MeV-C-irradiated Ho:Yb:YVO4 waveguide at a wavelength of 632.8 nm. According to the upconversion (UC) photoluminescence investigation, the original fluorescence performances of Ho:Yb:YVO4 crystal can be well retained except that the emitting intensity slightly degrades after C ions irradiation.
