High rates of aggression do not predict rates of trauma in captive groups of macaques

•Trauma is an undesirable consequence of group housing rhesus macaques.•We tested if social aggression rates predict rates of different types of trauma.•Aggression shows an inconsistent, sometimes negative, relationship with trauma.•High rates of impartial conflict intervention predict low trauma rates.
