Effects of water on ionic liquid electrochemical microsensor for oxygen sensing

•A miniaturizing, planar interdigited electrochemical sensor chip was successfully designed and fabricated.•The effect of water on ionic liquid planar microsensor has been systematically studied in the case of sensing oxygen.•The microsensor exhibited excellent O2 sensing properties including the sensitivity, reproducibility and repeatability.•The microsensor showed good long-term stability.
