•The year-round presence of the Chukchi Slope Current is established.•Co-variability between the current and shelfbreak jet is driven by wind stress curl.•Shelfbreak upwelling in the Chukchi Sea is not correlated with regional winds.•Watermass signals imply that the slope current is fed by outflow from Barrow Canyon.
