摘要
A goal of nuclear science is to achieve an understanding ofnuclei and their properties rooted in the fundamental nucleonnucleon interactions while demonstrating predictive power forthe shortest-lived species located at the fringes of the nuclearchart. In the quest to extrapolate knowledge to the mostneutron-rich systems, including those that may remain beyondexperimental reach, much can be learned from nuclei withlarge neutron excess that clearly display the effects of structural evolution away from the valley of stability. Observablesmeasured for such nuclei provide important extrapolationpoints toward unknown regions, and their successful modelingoffers critical benchmarks for theory. Specifically, the complex interplay between single-particle and collective degreesof freedom in the nuclear many-body system provides uniqueand interesting experimental and theoretical challenges.
