Ex situ phenology of Zizania texana, an endangered aquatic macrophyte, under different water velocities

•Texas wild rice has fast initial growth rates of 0.4 m d−1 in flowing water.•Plants in slower flows produced greater numbers of flowers and tillers.•Asynchronous pistillate and staminate development prevents self-fertilization.•Texas wild rice completes its life cycle from seed to seed production in ≤31 weeks.
