Nostalgia promotes intrinsic motivation and effort in the presence of low interactional justice

•We show that nostalgia promotes intrinsic motivation and work effort.•It does so in particular in situations of low (vs. high) interactional justice.•We report evidence from one cross-sectional and one experimental ESM study.•An additional experiment shows that past directedness mediates this effect.
