Schumann resonance frequency and conductivity in the nighttime ionosphere of Mars: A source for lightning

•A theoretical model is developed for calculating the SR profiles for modes l = 1, 2 and 3 in the non-homogeneous surface-ionosphere cavity during major dust storm in Martian Year 25.•It is found that the lightning can occur within the accumulated dust layer at ∼20–30 km altitudes.
