•Roadkill spatial distribution was studied across sections of four southern Iberian roads.•Roadkills significantly more frequent (2/3 of all animals) off asphalt surfaces by foot surveys.•Different vertebrate groups had different spatial roadkill patterns regarding asphalt surfaces.
