A 3-D finger motion measurement system via soft strain sensors for hand rehabilitation

•A soft rope-embedding strain sensor is developed.•Characteristics of the sensors are tested theoretically and experimentally.•A mathematical model to identify non-coplanar angular motion is proposed.•An algorithm for recognizing the two movements of carpometacarpal joint is deduced.•Performance of the system is tested with the developed sensors and measuring method.
