•Polysulfone surface was nano-structured with tethered polyacrylic acid (PAA)•Tethered PAA chain swelling was evaluated in aqueous environments.•Surface hydrophilicity was imparted to PSf surface by a tethered PAA layer.•PSf membrane surfaces with tethered PAA chains were efficiently cleaned.
