Screening white-rot fungi for bioremediation potential of 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin

•White-Rot Fungi are efficient degraders of organic pollutants such as organo-halogens.•Fungal Lignolytic enzymes, like laccase, break open aromatic ring structures.•White-Rot fungus FMD21 breaks down TCDD, the most toxic and stable dioxin congener.•Dioxins are persistent environmental pollutants which end up in agricultural biomass.•Fungal bioremediation of dioxins can help alleviate effects caused by these pollutants.
