•Two manure application methods were compared for loss of P species and TS.•Shallow-disk manure injection caused more dilution of DP and TP than broadcasting.•Shallow-disk injection reduced soluble P availability more than broadcasting.•Broadcasting and shallow-disk injection led to similar transport dynamics for TS.•Large subsurface flow volumes were found to act as a primary diluter of P.
