Active packaging films as a carrier of black cumin essential oil: Development and effect on quality and shelf-life of chicken breast meat

•Active film containing black cumin oil was developed by layer-by-layer technique.•Active film was characterized and used as antimicrobial packaging for chicken meat.•Quality and shelf-life of chicken meat were improved during refrigerated storage.•Application of active packaging film could maintain safety of meat and meat products.
