•Early Cretaceous diorites are identified for the first time in the Gaoligong Orogen.•The rocks were produced by mixing of the mantle- and crust-derived melts in an arc setting.•The Gaoligong orogen is the southward extension of the Bangonghu-Nujiang suture.
