•Lemon fin barb hybrid grew faster with biofloc technology (BFT) compared to recirculating system.•No growth improvement for African catfish with BFT might be due to their inefficient filter feeding abilities.•Crude protein, lipid and ash content of bioflocs decreased with increasing duration.•Regardless of fish, water quality and cost-effectiveness was better with BFT.
