•Cellulose nanocrystals from pine cones (3, 5 and 7 wt%) were added to PHB/PCL blend films.•Addition of CNCs enhanced the transparency of the PHB/PCL films.•Addition of CNCs improved the biodegradability of the PHB/PCL films.•The best dispersion of CNCs on the PHB/PCL blends was at a load of 3 wt%.
