•A fire detection sensor was realized based on 2.33 μm DFB laser and WMS technique.•A digital orthogonal lock-in amplifier was developed based on DAQ and LabVIEW program.•A first-harmonic-normalized wavelength modulation spectroscopy with second-harmonic detection strategy was employed for data processing.
