•A new class of rural region, “sparsely settled forest”(SSF) is conceptualized.•SSF represent a large important fraction of the US and can be found globally.•There is substantial socioeconomic variation, often at small spatial scales within SSF.•SSF have shifted at the margins, expanding and contracting around urban and wildland landscapes.
