•The decrease of FVII activity is closely related to the increase of brain contusion hemorrhage size.•FVIIa prevents the progressive hemorrhaging of brain contusions by protecting microvessel endothelial cells.•Ternary TF–FVIIa–FXa protects endothelial cells through activating p44/42 MAPK and inhibiting p65 NF-κB signaling pathway.
