Design recommendations for achieving “strong column-weak beam” in RC frames

•Test of spatial reinforced concrete frame with cast in-situ slabs was carried out.•The strut and tie model of slab is proposed.•The simple equations of the effective slab width is derived by a 95% guarantee rate.•A reasonable required ratio of column-to-beam strength is proposed.
