A number of electric and electronic systems is responsible for the safe operation of today's vehicles. Much of the improvement of traffic safety during the last decade can be attributed to these systems. To an increasing extent, steering, brake and powertrain are controlled by so called x-by-wire systems, which enhance the active and passive safety of the vehicle. In this context, x-by-wire systems are systems that decouple the sensation of the drivers action and its actuation. The transfer of energy and information proceeds electrically. The basic technologies of these systems are fault-tolerant highly reliable architectures. The following contribution gives a survey on essential architectural characteristics of these systems and highlights legal aspects as well as arising liability questions.
