Combination of the Mandarin verb' Dú'(读) with nouns from the perspective of the generative lexicon theory

The combination and generation of meaning do not always obey Frege's principle.In many cases,the meaning of the whole structure is beyond the semantic totality of its constituents.Under the guideline of the generative lexicon theory and through retrieving the relevant corpora,this paper investigates the collocations of the Mandarin verbdu(read)with nouns on the basis of qualia roles,semantic types and relevant compositional mechanisms,and illustrates that the combination of the verb with nouns is complex.Besides,the paper discusses the irregular objects of the verb duand concludes that qualia roles can provide a new explanation for the formation ofduand its irregular objects.
