Estrogen receptor β actions in the female cardiovascular system: A systematic review of animal and human studies

•Five databases were searched for studies that evaluated the role of ERβ in the female cardiovascular system and the influence of age and menopause.•88 studies met our inclusion criteria and the majority of studies were conducted in animals.•ERβ-signaling may possess vasodilator, antiangiogenic and anti-inflammatory properties.•ERβ signaling may have protect against left ventricular hypertrophy and ischemia/reperfusion injury via genomic and non-genomic pathways.•The vascular effects of ERβ may be vessel-specific and may depend on age and menopause status.•These findings contribute with the identification of potential therapeutic targets, but further evaluations in humans are warranted.
