    •A new algorithm to compute the moments defined in a rectangular region is developed.•It is verified that our computational method can efficiently and accurately compute Legendre, Gegenbauer, and Jacobi moments.•With our new algorithm, using the higher orders of moments defined in a rectangular region in real-time image analysis and recognition applications will be possible.
