•This study assessed the relationship between PTSD symptoms and negative affect.•Moment-to-moment symptoms were examined using ecological momentary assessment.•The direction of the relationship was assessed with cross-lagged path analyses.•PTSD drove the relationship between momentary PTSD symptoms and negative affect.
