Development of a small car-mounted magnetic resonance imaging system for human elbows using a 0.2 T permanent magnet.

•A portable, elbow MRI that can be installed in a standard-size car was developed.•The instrument provided clinically relevant images at screening of elbow injuries.•The instrument is deployable during sport events.•The instrument is also deployable in environments with poor access to MRI.
