•149 children were trained to practice transanal irrigation (TAI).•Fecal incontinence or constipation was due to neurogenic disorders or malformations.•After 14months, 129 patients were still using the TAI system, every 2days for most.•Mid-term adherence seems to depend on the quality of the therapeutic education.
