•Evolution of the complex human phenotype could rely on alternate transcription.•Identifying 24 human TRPM8 mRNAs, we inferred their evolution in Amniota.•TRPM8 mRNA diversification occurred in the Boreoeutheria and Simiiformes ancestors.•This study provides new insights in the evolution of cold sensors.
